9. Kiss

She was nervous when they retired that night. Remy took his time in the bathing room, proclaiming before he disappeared behind the door that he was looking forward to scrubbing away the dust before he came to bed.

She sat in one of her nightdresses beneath the bedclothes, wondering if they would couple again before they slept. He’d made no mention of it, and she kept replaying his comments, trying to decide if they indicated whether or not another joining would be forthcoming.

He had not been displeased, or so he’d claimed. But there was more he wanted from her all the same. She swallowed thickly, her hands tight upon the blankets, as she tried to work out exactly what he might have meant. He wanted to be wanted—that she remembered. For her to desire the act as well.

It had not been as painful as she’d feared. And while the ending of it had been a relief, there were moments that, although confusing, had been rather pleasant.

Her back hurt from her stiff hold as sentry as she watched the door. She should simply have asked him if he would want her to be ready for coupling.

Her throat tightened again. He might be glad that she had not been prepared by trusted females, but she still would have had their advice—to know the way of wives if they desired to better accommodate their husbands.

Everything was new and foreign and there were so many conflicted feelings warring within her that she had worked herself up into a tight ball of anxiety when at last he emerged. His other victory of the day was engaging two of the lamps with his new device, both of which dimmed as he passed, a flash of silver in his palm showing how he controlled them.

She blinked at him when he approached. It seemed to be his preference not to sleep with a covering on his top half, but surely if he meant for them to couple, he would have not bothered with the bottoms either.

The blanket was a wrinkled mess between her fingers and her husband frowned at her when he approached. “I did not mean for you to wait for me.”

She blew out a tense breath and managed a shaky smile in his direction. “I wasn’t sure,” she began, then the words grew stuck and it was a struggle to finish at all. “I did not know if I should be available for...” She chewed at her lip, ashamed of herself. He’d spoken of obligation, of her desire, and she was blushing and fumbling like the maiden she wasn’t.

He eased into the bed beside her, the weight of the overly soft bed sinking down to accommodate his presence.

“Not tonight,” he answered, sparing her from having to stumble over her own tongue and errant thoughts.

“Oh,” she murmured, more to herself than to him. She wasn’t disappointed, she told herself firmly. There were still tender areas down below, and she should be grateful for his consideration.

And she was. If.
